The roofline is the cheapest part of your roof to maintain and the most expensive part to neglect. A blocked gutter costs nothing to clear. The wet wall, the rotten fascia, the damp in the bedroom and the timber repairs it eventually causes cost a great deal
Most people who call us are in one of four situations. Find yours.
Leaves, moss washed down off the roof, birds' nests. Water overflows, runs down the wall, and saturates the masonry. On a Perthshire sandstone or harled wall that's a real problem — persistent saturation leads to damp inside, spalling stone in frost, and rotten timbers at the wall head. Almost every "rising damp" call-out we hear about in Perth turns out to be a gutter.
Brackets fail, joints open, the fall goes wrong and water sits in the gutter instead of running to the downpipe. Old cast iron is heavy and pulls its own fixings out over decades.
The board the gutter is fixed to. Once the gutter has been overflowing behind it for a few years, the fascia rots, and then the gutter has nothing to hold onto.
The horizontal underside of the eaves. Rots the same way, and once there's a hole in it you've provided a superb entrance to your loft for birds, wasps and squirrels.
Your roof space needs airflow. Soffit vents provide it. If the soffit is solid, or the insulation has been stuffed hard into the eaves, the roof can't breathe — and a Scottish loft that can't breathe gets condensation, which rots the sarking from the inside.
Comprehensive roofline, guttering, and fascia services executed with precision safety standards and specialized materials for long-term protection.
By hand from a ladder or tower, not blasted with a hose from below.
Resealing joints, replacing brackets, correcting the fall.
uPVC, aluminium, or cast-iron-effect where the property (or the conservation area) demands it.
Repair or replacement in kind on period properties.
Timber or uPVC, with the roof edge detailed properly and eaves ventilation reinstated.
Including where the downpipe discharges. A downpipe that dumps water onto the ground next to the wall is barely better than no downpipe at all.
If you're having a reroof, do the roofline while the scaffolding is up. The scaffold is a substantial part of the cost of a roofline job, and you've already paid for it. Doing it separately a year later means paying for it twice.

Very often, yes. Look at the wall during heavy rain and you’ll usually see it immediately. Free to check, cheap to fix, expensive to ignore.
uPVC for most properties — cheap, light, doesn’t rot, doesn’t need painting. Cast iron on listed or conservation-area properties where it’s required, or where you simply want the look. It’s a great deal more expensive and it needs maintaining, and we’ll be straight with you about that.
